# Staying Warm in the Swimming Pool

With pool weather just around the corner, you’re probably itching to head to a public pool or open up your at-home pool for some serious swimming. Yet for some, a cold pool—or a particularly difficult time keeping the body warm in cooler water—can put a major damper on things. And jumping head-first into a cold pool and waiting for the body to adjust doesn’t always seem like an attractive option. So how do you combat colder pool waters for a fun time in the pool? Here are some tips to keeping warm in the pool as the weather starts to warm up.

**Dress Warmly**

Rash guards or wetsuits are most often donned by surfers braving colder waters, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get them for your own swimming as well. This swimming gear can help your body conserve heat and maintain a warm body temperature, and with so many styles and designs available these days, these can be an option for anyone. Another great option is to wear a swim cap to prevent heat from escaping from the top of your head. And for the truly dedicated? Gloves and booties are options as well.

**Get Active**

One of the fastest ways to help your body warm up is to get your body moving. In fact, most swimmers who swim for exercise or race on a regular basis prefer for pools to be slightly chilly upon first stepping in so that when they get swimming, the water will feel just the right temperature. So move your limbs around and start treading water as soon as you get in the pool; you’ll warm up in no time.

**Eat for a Warmer Body**

Did you know that certain foods can actually help your body regulate body temperature? Iron-rich meats such as lean beef, pork, and poultry as well as complex carb-rich foods like potatoes and lentils are the things you want to be opting for. Good fats like those found in organic nuts, olive oil, and avocados, and spicy foods containing chili or cayenne pepper are also great options.

**In-Pool Heating**

Don’t forget that in-pool heating systems are always an option, and they have the special ability of extending the swim season for your pool. If being cold in the pool is something that your family often experiences, consider installing a water heater for your pool.
