# In-Ground vs. Above-Ground Pools

When the temperatures are soaring and you need some relief from the heat, many people wish they had a pool in their backyard.  If you’ve made the decision to install one, the first big question is whether you want to install an in-ground or an above-ground pool.  In this article we’ll take a look at some of the main differences between in-ground and above-ground pools so you can be sure to make the best choice for your home.

**Cost**

Both in-ground and above-ground pools have several different factors that contribute to the overall cost.  In general, the overall cost of an in-ground pool is higher; it includes the actual pool, patio or decking around the pool, the necessary electrical hook-up, any grading or landscaping, and accessories (such as heaters, covers, etc).  An above-ground pool generally costs less; the overall cost includes the price of the pool, the price of installation, and any surrounding decking.

**Use & Safety**

The second thing to consider is use, what you plan to do in the pool. Parents of small children or those with pets will find that above ground pools are generally safer.  However, above-ground pools limit you to one depth (there is no shallow end and deep end) and are not deep enough for any type of diving or head-first jumping.

**Size**

The third thing to consider is the size of your yard.  Above ground pools tend to come in a larger variety of shapes and sizes, which makes them easier to fit into any sized yard.

**Durability**

Above-ground pools generally last anywhere from 7-15 years (with the liners needing to be replaced every 5-9 years).  Above-ground pools can also be drained, packed and transported if you decide to move.  In-ground pools have a wider range of lifespans, depending on the type of pool.  Fiberglass lasts around 20 years, while vinyl and concrete structures will last indefinitely (though the vinyl liner needs to be replaced every 6-11 years and the concrete will need to be resurfaced every 9-13 years).

**Appearance**

The final thing to consider is appearance.  Above ground pools can come across as more awkward.  In-ground pools can be great assets to your overall landscaping and will increase the overall value of your home.

Both above-ground and in-ground pools can be a great oasis in your backyard, providing you and your family with a place to escape from the summer heat.  Make sure that you take all these factors into consideration when making your choice so that you will end up with a pool that you will enjoy for years to come.
